Fatemeh Mirzapour-Shafiyi received her undergraduate degree in 2011 from the School of Material Eng. & Advanced Processes, Tehran Polytechnic. During her master’s studies in Advanced Materials-Biomaterials, she took an interest in biomedical research. She received her M.Sc. in 2015, working on the effect of fluid shear stress on endothelial planar cell polarity at the Department of Experimental Physics, University of Ulm. As a graduate research assistant, she studied endothelial growth and barrier function at the Laboratory of Cell Polarity and Organogenesis, Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research (MPI-HLR) in Bad Nauheim. She started her doctoral research in 2016 in the same lab studying the correlation between microvascular branching morphology and hemodynamics.

As a visiting doctoral candidate at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, she worked on a collaborative project to develop an image-based CFD method to simulate the microvascular flow. After graduating from a double degree training program between MPI-HLR & Philipps-Universität Marburg, she obtained her doctoral degree in 2020. The same year and after a short visit as a graduate researcher to the International Research Center for Medical Sciences, Kumamoto University, she started at TUM studying the effect of flow on the microvascular network assembly.
