Philipp Fleig studied Physics at Imperial College London where he obtained his Masters degree in 2010. He completed his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Potsdam in the field of high-energy Theoretical Physics (working on String Theory). He went on to join the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques in Paris as a Postdoctoral Fellow for two years, where he continued his work on the intersection between String Theory and pure mathematics. He then joined the Biological Physics group at MPIDS in fall 2016 with the interest of employing information theory to understand biological systems. One particular question driving his research is to understand in detailed how the flow of information in an organism is fundamental to its design. Philipp subsequently joined the group of Vijay Balasubramanian at the University of Pennsylvania.
